6 Essential Raw Materials for High-Quality Electrode Paste

The physical and chemical index of electrode paste depends largely on the raw materials used, and the quality of the finished products produced by the same kind of raw materials with different origins and preparation methods varies greatly, therefore, the raw materials must be selected correctly in order to produce electrode paste that meets the technical index requirements. There are basically two types of raw materials for the preparation of electrode paste: solid carbon raw materials (anthracite, residual, petroleum coke, crushed graphite) and binder (asphalt, coal tar).

❶ Calcined anthracite

Calcined anthracite is the main component of electrode paste, the carbon content is generally above 90%, with high mechanical strength. Calcined anthracite can be divided into electric calcined anthracite and gas calcined anthracite, which have dense structure, local graphitization and good electrical conductivity. When the electrode is sintered, it becomes the skeleton of the electrode, which is characterized by high carbon content, low volatile content, good electrical conductivity and thermal stability.

❷ Anode scrap

The anode scrap is the residual part of the prebaked anode after it has been used in the electrolytic cell. The cleaned anode scrap is broken, screened and divided into different particle sizes. The anode scrap particles are added as an aggregate particle in the production of the electrode paste.

❸ Calcined petroleum coke

Petroleum coke is the product of charring the residue of petroleum refining after high temperature treatment. It is characterized by low content of ash, easy graphitization. Petroleum coke from the refinery is generally raw coke, containing about 10~14% volatile, petroleum coke needs to be calcined at 1350℃ to remove volatile fraction before it can be used as raw material of carbon, calcined petroleum coke has the characteristics of small expansion coefficient, good thermal stability and easy graphitization at high temperature, which is a high quality material for manufacturing electrode paste.

❹ Graphite scrap

Graphite scrap is the waste and debris produced in the production of various graphite products. It has low ash content, low resistivity and good electrical conductivity. Adding a certain proportion of crushed graphite when producing electrode paste can increase the conductivity and thermal stability of the electrode, but the strength has a certain degree of decline.

❺ Metallurgical coke

Metallurgical coke is coke obtained by coking coal in a certain ratio of high-temperature dry distillation in a coke oven. Metallurgical coke can be used to produce various char blocks and electrode paste and other char products. Metallurgical coke is generally mixed with anthracite coal, and metallurgical coke can be closely combined with binder, thus improving the mechanical strength of char products.

❻ Coal Pitch

Coal pitch is the residue of coal tar distillation, sulfur and ash are very low, coal pitch charring to form asphalt coke not only will be carbon aggregate bonded together, while giving baked products higher mechanical strength and electrical and thermal conductivity, with good graphitization properties, is the most ideal binder material in the production of carbon materials.
